The
Lowering Of The Groundwater
Since the water table in Berlin lay at a depth of 3 metres and the base of the construction pit was to be at 10 metres, it was necessary to lower water levels in the region of the building site. Several well shafts were drilled close to the building site, from which water could be pumped via a system of pipes into the city’s drains. From now on the pumps worked day and night to keep the building site and later the bunker itself dry.
To remove ground water from the area of the bunker, a special pipe was laid at an angle through the garden of the Reich’s chancellery, ending in the drain at Hermann-Göring- Street.
